Beverly Anne Scarborough, 80, of Kountze, died Friday, March 29, 2024.  She was born on November 5, 1943, in Port Arthur, to Vallie Lindsey Robison and Kermit Edward Robison. Survivors include her husband, Oscar Scarborough; sons, Randy Scarborough of Richmond, Mark Scarborough of Wildwood, and Justin Scarborough of Kountze; grandchildren, Austin Scarborough of Kountze and Mason Scarborough of Wildwood; and step grandchildren, Wyatt and Jaxon Brown of Kountze.  She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karla Scarborough; and sister, Geda Nunley. A gathering of Beverly’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2024, at Broussard’s, 530 West Monroe, Kountze.  Her interment will follow at Holland Cemetery, Kountze.

Dr. Robert John Vokurka, PhD, was born June 12, 1948, to John and Charlotte Vokurka of Wheaton, Illinois. He was a naturally inquisitive and bright child who excelled in school and enjoyed following Chicago’s professional sports franchises, especially the Cubs and the Bears. He loved American history and was a patriot of a bygone age when decency to your fellow Americans was more important than getting your way all the time. He talked fondly all his life of family vacations fishing on Michigan’s lakes. While at Wheaton Central High School he participated in the high school band and graduated in 1964. He continued his education at Albion College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Jimmy F. Shifflett, known as “Energy Pawpaw” and simply Pawpaw, passed away peacefully at his home in Kountze, on December 17, 2023, at the age of 81. He was born on July 6, 1942, in Orange, Texas, to Helen Hales Shifflett and Joe Shifflett. Jimmy was a devoted husband of 45 years, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather. He cared deeply about his family and community, always guided by a strong moral compass that led him to fight for what was right. After serving in the United States Army actively from 1959 to 1962, Jimmy performed various odd jobs throughout the Golden Triangle area, as well as becoming a lifelong member of the Port Neches Masonic Lodge, and then pursued a career in law enforcement in 1969. Barbara Jean Kraus, 69, of Kingwood, died Sunday, December 10, 2023.  She was born on July 2, 1954, in Houston, to Angeline and Douglas Hayden. Barbara’s life work was dedicated to the health and care of others, serving as an RN and pediatric nurse practitioner for over forty years. She graduated from Lamar University and the University of Texas with degrees in nursing, proceeding to practice at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, before teaching at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada. Erma Cozene Baker, 86, of Kountze, died Saturday, September 23, 2023.  She was born on November 11, 1936, in Timpson Tx, to Mary Pauline Snelson Williams and Buford Elmo Williams. Margaret Rose (Selix) Davis, who arrived to this world on October 17, 1962, in Alice, TX. and departed after sixty years on September 19, 2023. Margaret saw herself as a loving mother, always thinking of her children first. She enjoyed cooking and hosting family and friends whenever they were near and never walked away from a good card game whether it was Uno, War, Hearts, Books, Spoons, or 10,000. We all have card stories to share! Margaret loved country music and began songwriting at the early age of ten and later taught herself to play the guitar, writing many songs with her dad. Rita Henley Williams, 68, of Saratoga, died Friday, September 15, 2023, in the arms of her beloved daughter, Heather. She was born on January 17, 1955, in Silsbee, Texas to Ruby Carlile Henley and Gilbert E. Henley. Rita was a life-long resident of the Silsbee area and a graduate of Silsbee High School. As an adult, Rita and her dad joked that his position with the Texas Highway Department seriously hindered her ability to get into trouble in high school because his work routes always coincided with her location when she wasn’t where she was supposed to be. Gray, Sr., age 89, of Sour Lake, stepped into the heavenly realm to be with his Father God and Lord Jesus Christ at 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.  He entered this life on Friday, July 20, 1934, in Hammond, Louisiana, to his late parents, Henry Theodore Gray and Beatrice Davis Gray. Jack is a United States Army veteran and retired from the Beaumont Fire Department in 1984 after serving twenty-three years as Captain at Stations 3 and 9.  Jack also celebrated sixty-five years of service to the Grand Masonic Lodge of Texas. Beatrice Duce, 78, of Kountze, passed away peacefully on the sixtieth anniversary of her and Paul’s marriage, Wednesday, June 14, 2023. She was born on November 23, 1944, in Beaumont, to Eiliene Carter Sharp and David Turner Sharp. Bea, as she was known to her friends and family spent most of her life in Kountze.  After graduating from Kountze High School, she attended Beauty College.  Over her life she cut and curled hair for the ladies of Kountze.  Besides her work she enjoyed spending time with her friends, family and numerous nieces and nephews.  She and Paul traveled extensively throughout the United States.  Her passion was crocheting.  All her family and friends have a crocheted treasure to remember her by. Henry “Peanut” Paul Dugat, 82, of Warren, died peacefully at home Monday, April 24, 2023, with his family by his side. He was born on March 30, 1941, in Sour Lake, to Erna Mae Rhame Dugat and Clarence Paul Dugat. He was employed with the International Longshoremen’s Association of Clerks and Checkers Local 1665 during his Port of Galveston career. For thirty years, he worked full-time on the docks, and maintained a working cattle ranch and soybean farm in Hardin County. After retiring in 1989, he reapplied his full-time attention to farming and ranching. Henry was a volunteer and board member to numerous community organizations in the Sour Lake area. Ollie Adaway Murphy, 98, of Village Mills, died Sunday, April 9, 2023. She was born on December 31, 1924, in Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, to Alice Alphin Adaway and Sebastian Adaway. Ollie enjoyed water skiing in her youth. She found joy in her grandchildren and sporting events. She was an Astros fan, loved the outdoors, and enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She will forever remain a loving wife, mother, and MawMaw. Patricia Sue Robinson, 77, of Village Mills, died Friday, February 17, 2023.  She was born on April 18, 1945, in Lake Providence, Louisiana, to Bonnie Harville Myers and E.C. Myers. Patricia loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She will be remembered for her beautiful singing, knitting, and planting and tending to her roses. Eugenia “Kandy” Sanner, 94, of Wildwood, died Sunday, February 12, 2023. She was born on November 15, 1928, in Columbus, to Genoveva Santos Ojeda and Jesus M. Ojeda. Survivors include her children, JoAnn Jenkins and her husband, Richard, of Woodstock, Georgia; David Dempsey of Houston; Terry Sanner and his wife, Sherri, of Fort Worth; Lori Sanner of Houston; and Teresa Sanner of Wildwood; grandchildren, Michael, Lisa, Ryan, Brittany, Chelsea and Ashley; numerous great-grandchildren and ten siblings. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Sanner; daughter, Alice Christian; grandchildren, Maurice Sanner and Melissa Burnham; siblings, Duffy Ojeda and Pete Ojeda.
