Kim Wood

June 18, 1949 - August 9, 2018

Kim Wood, 69, of Silsbee, died Thursday, August 9, 2018. She was born on June 18, 1949, in Denver, Colorado, to Martha Osborne Applegate and Byron Lee Applegate. Kim worked for thirty-three years as a teacher for Kountze Independent School District.

Kim loved her entire family with all her heart. She saw joy through the eyes of others. She was always asking about the wellbeing of her children, grandchildren, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and would never miss a birthday party, wedding or family celebration. Through her love of family and people she spread her joy across the thousands of kids she taught in public school in Kountze. She was always very involved in their lives and always watched out for their heart, not only shaping them intellectually, but giving them a global view of the world through her trips to Washington D.C. every 3 years with the students. She lived a full life of family, friends and teaching public school and swimming. In her later years since retirement, she went on a deep spiritual journey where she read through and studied the entire Bible. It was this journey that gave her strength to carry on even after her medical diagnosis. She has even said THIS was the best season of her life. As believers, we understand that is because she felt a deeper sense for humanity, the burden of sharing the Gospel and advancing the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, a burden that she embraced as she often shared the Gospel with nurses and doctors at MD Anderson. This was her mission field.

Survivors include her husband of forty-two years, Garrie Wood, Jr.; children, Garrie Wood, III and his wife, Ruth Ann, of San Antonio; David L. Wood and his wife, Lisa, of Pearland; Melinda Lowe and her husband, Larry, of Silsbee; and Justin Wood and his wife, Melinda, of Houston; nine grandchildren; father, Byron Lee Applegate; sibling, Lohren Applegate and his wife, Janet, of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother; and brother, Byron W. Applegate.

A gathering of Kim’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with her funeral service at 3:00 p.m., Monday, August 13, 2018, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. A private family committal will be in Houston at a later date.

Kim was an amazing person and my friend. I have known her since 1974 when she lived in Austin. Our paths crossed again when we lived in Houston and then married Garrie. She will be sorely missed.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family. Mrs. Wood was a wonderful teacher. I had her 2 times in Junior High and my son had her his 4th grade year 2 years ago. She always made sure to encourage us to do our best and believed we could.

My beloved sister words can not express how I am feeling. I am grateful you are no longer feeling pain instead comfort and peace from our Lord. You were the joy of my life and an inspiration to me. I will always love you and know I am connected with you forever. God bless you and keep you safe until we see you in the hereafter. Love Lohren-
