Ruth Cornwell

Ruth Denson Cornwell, 93, of Silsbee, died Monday, July 15, 2019. She was born on May 8, 1926, in Silsbee, to Eugenia Alvenia Phillips and Charles McKinney Denson.

She graduated from Silsbee High and attended Chenier Business School before working for the Beaumont Enterprise and Gulf Oil Corporation. In 1945, Ruth married Wendell Cornwell, her late husband of sixty-eight years. Ruth and Wendell built their home and raised their family on cherished land along the Village Creek that her ancestors from Prussia settled in 1850. Her passion was her role as devoted homemaker and mother to her three sons.

Ruth loved cooking and preparing wonderful feasts for her extended family gatherings for many years continuing into her 90’s. Her vegetable garden and flowers were a source of great joy. She had an engaging personality and mastered texting and social media to stay in touch with family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Daniel Cornwell, of Silsbee; grandchildren, John David Cornwell and his wife, Tricia, of Pearland; Jason Daniel Cornwell and his wife, Sara, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Ashli Sambaluk and her husband, Eric, of Grapevine; and great-grandchildren, Lila Page Cornwell and Davis Cornwell.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Leroy Cornwell; parents; sons, David Wendall Cornwell and Jonathan Keith Cornwell; granddaughter, Page Lynn Carpenter; and siblings, Marie Freeman, Maude Cook, Minnie Tuttle, Myrtis Sampson, and Fred Denson.

The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last days.

A gathering of Ms. Cornwell’s family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m., with her funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2019, at Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. Her interment will follow at Knupple Cemetery, Silsbee.
