After several years of golf, he started running and found his way to the start and finish lines of some marathons including the NYC marathon twice. He later took up cycling, and enjoyed several Texas MS rides, the Iowa RAGBRAI ride, a challenging scenic Colorado ride, as well as his favorite Nebraska rides (BRAN and Tour de Nebraska).

Dean is survived by his wife, Naomi Maureen Winchell; and stepson Jacob Thompson and his wife, Summer, of Beaumont, Texas; sister, Sharon Johnson and her husband Richard of Norfolk, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Debra Winchell of York, Nebraska, Kathleen Hambright and her husband Robert, Carol Hearn and her husband Donald, Jo Bienvenu and her husband Michael and Gerry Edwards and her husband Lum, all of Beaumont, Texas. He is also survived by numerous, and much loved, nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his brother, James Gerald Winchell and his parents Eunice and Gerald Winchell.

I will always consider Dean to be a great friend and remember our times in High School hunting pheasants, chasing a rabbit around a local dentists office after a football or basketball game in North Platte and many other good times. He was a great person to know and be around and will miss him much. . One our great NPHS 1968 graduates. RIP Dean,
