Evelyn White Bartlett

March 10, 1926 - April 12, 2020

Evelyn White Bartlett, 94, of Beaumont, passed away on Easter Day, April 12, 2020. She was born March 10, 1926, in Alco, Louisiana, to Myrtle and Lonnie Dyer, and was a longtime resident of Beaumont, Texas, where she graduated high school in 1943.

Evelyn was active and sharp her entire life.  After being widowed at a young age, she worked as a secretary for the Federal Communications Commission and raised her daughter Susan as a single parent.  She was also responsible for the care of her elderly mother for many years.  Evelyn loved the outdoors, baking, correspondence, reading, technology, and sports – particularly the Houston Astros and little league baseball. She lettered in track and continued running into adulthood. She was an avid ham radio operator as was her second husband, Harold. She was involved in local ham radio activities, the Civil Air Patrol, the Citizen Police Academy, and Christian Fellowship Church. She also enjoyed getting together and keeping in touch with many lifelong friends.  Evelyn remained mentally sharp, self-reliant, and independent to the end. She was admired for her intelligence, sincerity, good-naturedness, resilience, and moxie.  She will be dearly missed by the many friends and family members she leaves behind.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Susan Faye Strahan and husband, Robert; stepdaughter, Carol Bartlett Nallie and husband, Raymond; grandchildren, Lindsay Nallie and Jason Nallie; sister, Faye Hasse; sister-in-law, Jackie Dyer; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle Johnson Dyer and Lonnie Dyer; first husband, Robert Earl White; second husband, Harold Bartlett; brother, Woodrow Dyer; and sisters, Hazel Aldred and Floyce Bowden.

The prayers and support of family and friends are greatly appreciated.  Evelyn’s immediate family will hold a private graveside ceremony at Magnolia Cemetery in Beaumont under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, they hope to have a memorial service so that extended family and friends may gather in her memory.

Susan, Your mom was a sweet lady and will be dearly missed. She has been on my mind and I am so sorry I did not take the time to go see her more recently. My last visit with her was a good one but too long ago. I would love to hear from you. Prayers and hugs my dear friend.

Aunt Evelyn you were such a sweet and sincere person. You were always greeting us with a smile and always interested in what was going on in our lives. You loved hearing about my pack of cairn terriers and you loved the pictures I would send you of them. You were a real animal lover. We will miss you. I know you are in Heaven now with your other loved ones . It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known you. May you Rest In Peace.

This is a woman I deeply admired and dearly loved. She endured hardships with grace and supported her family financially and emotionally. She built a career while raising her daughter and caring for her mother. She was a "superwoman" before that term was even created. There were wonderful Sunday afternoon visits at our house, and she never came empty handed. She brought baked goods galore, and while Dad was still alive, she always brought him recorded movies for him to watch later. Wishing all those who met her, could have known her like the family experienced her...She will be sorely missed.

I was never blessed with meeting your mother Evelyn, but I have a vivid memory of her and her hobbies, joys, and trailblazing. Once when I was visiting Susan and Robert, I was going to have toast for breakfast. I asked if you had any fruit spread in the house. There was only one jar. . .a fridge jam made by your mother. You had lovingly put it into your fridge, but you hadn't opened it yet. The peaches sounded wonderful, but Evelyn had gotten "creative," and there were bananas, spices, and red cocktail cherries in the jam! I was game, so we opened up the jam. Since it was open, you tried some, too, and it was wonderful. I volunteered to adopt it and take it home, but you said no, no, you would make sure it was fully appreciated--and thanked me for helping you be brave with one of Evelyn's more exotic inventions. I am so glad you shared so much of your life with this vital woman, and so sorry that she has finally Gone Ahead. Sending you all much love..

Our family has lost yet another great one. Another of the Greatest Generation; another who seemed unstoppable, Aunt Evelyn was truly an inspiration. She was the second eldest of six children, and the first girl of five. From a very young age, she helped raise her siblings, and her sense of duty and responsibility never ceased. My cousin, Marian Dyer, said it best in her comments below: Our Aunt Evelyn was the original “Superwoman.” I will also always remember her kindness, generosity and understanding. I will always cherish our trips to Dean’s Barbecue, Rao’s Bakery and Six Flags. She was an accomplished career woman, in a time when it was not very common to be a woman with a career outside the home. She also loved baking, sewing and gardening . Her greatest pass time, it seemed was HAM radio, a forum in which she met, over the air waves, people from around the world. Again, she was ahead of her time, involved in a forerunner of social media. She had a myriad of interests, including history and medical science. One could say she had strong opinions and enjoyed sharing them. When challenged, she always “stuck to her guns.” In closing I will say that there was so much to this wonderful lady that one could hardly say enough, but the greatest thing she was to me was a treasured friend who propped me up and kept me going through very challenging times in my life; she gave and gave of herself, always reaching out to help and encourage. I am heartbroken to have lost my dear friend who just happened to be my aunt.
