Jimmy Bishop

February 14, 1949 - May 26, 2018

Jimmy Bishop rested on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont. Jim was born the only child to Hazel Williams Bishop and Anthony Wayne Bishop on February 14, 1949, the Valentine Baby, at Hancock Hospital in Jasper.

Jimmy and his family moved to San Antonio when he was 3. Before graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1967, he was the City Junior Golf Champion of San Antonio. Jim was offered a full golf scholarship to Lamar University, where he played golf under the supervision of Coach Dan Rogas and earned a degree in Marketing.

Jim proudly served in the United States Army, having achieved the rank of E4. He was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, on the military golf course, from 1972 to 1974, serving at the pleasure of many well-respected generals.

Jim’s career as a real-estate appraiser in the Southeast Texas area spanned over thirty years. He earned the designation of MAI from the Appraisal Institute, following his mentor, Mr. William C. “Bill” Cook and he was well respected in the appraisal field.

Jim and Debbie loved traveling to Belize with cousins, Amanda and Bill and building houses in Crystal Beach.

Papa Jim, as he is lovingly referred to by his new precious family, is survived by his wife, Debbie; son, Jared and his wife, Sunni; and precious grandchild, Lola.

Our family wishes to extend thanks to our wonderful care givers, Emma, JoJe, Melissa, Annalyn, and Mina. They saved our lives! We also express our gratitude to the staff of Harbor Hospice for their compassionate care.

A gathering of Mr. Bishop’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. His graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Magnolia Cemetery, 2291 Pine Street, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Bishop’s memory to Lamar University Athletic Club-Men’s and Women’s Golf Program, 211 Redbird Lane, Beaumont, Texas 77710.

Jim will be dearly missed!! Jim is the only person that could walk into our business to the theme of Rocky playing on his cell phone, wearing a Nike headband with sweatbands on each wrist and get away with it!! In a business where we change lives, our lives and the lives of all that trained with Jim are forever changed. He had the heart of a champion and a laugh that was contagious! Jim held true to his "Rocky themed spirit". In the movie, Rocky says "It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward!" Jim inspired all of us to rise above challenges, laugh, love others and roll with the punches. We are forever blessed to know such an awesome man! We love you Deb, Jared, Sunni and Lola!

I am so thankful I got to call you Father-in-law! Even though our time together was short, it didn’t take long to see what a wonderful, well-respected man you were. Your legacy lives on in your wonderful son- whom I have the privilege to love and call my husband. He is quite a gentleman and I’m certain that’s because of the fine example he had before him. Lola made you our “Papa Jim” and that, you will always be remembered as. You are loved and you will be missed dearly. Until we meet again... Love always, your daughter-in-law.
