Marie “Mongie” Eisen Swartz

Marie “Mongie” Eisen Swartz, 93, of Beaumont, died peacefully Thursday, August 10, 2017, at Baptist Hospital of Southeast Texas, Beaumont. She was born on November 11, 1923, in Beaumont, to Yetta Speer Eisen and Harry Eisen.

Mongie and beloved sisters Florence Eisen Rosenthal and Natalie Eisen Schlosser and many beloved Speer family cousins grew up in a warm and nurturing family environment in Beaumont.   Mongie attended Millard Elementary School, Dick Dowling Junior High and graduated Beaumont High School in the great class of 1940 before attending Lamar College to earn a degree in accounting.    When World War II broke out, Mongie left college to first work in the accounting office of the Beaumont Enterprise and later for the War Emergency Pipeline.  In 1942 Mongie met a young army officer, Leonard Swartz and after a courtship was married on March 28th, 1943.   Mongie and Leonard first lived in Deridder, Louisiana where Leonard was stationed at Camp Polk, then Fort Benning Georgia and later at Fort Ord California.   While Leonard “shipped-out” as an amphibious tank battalion commander to the Pacific for two years, Mongie returned to Beaumont to live, work and wait for the war to end.

While Mongie was raising her two sons, Gary and Bruce, she was always active in her religious community.   Her family were members of Congregation Kol Israel where she was active in their sisterhood and all congregational activities.    She was also a member of Hadassah and later an active member of the Sisterhood of Temple Emanuel. Mongie loved to cook and prepare delicious foods.    No holiday went by without her baking wonderful cakes and breads to share with family and friends. Mongie was always one of the first to pay a visit to a sick friend and would share her baked goodies and a warm smile.  She was also an active member of the Beaumont community which she was so proud of.   She volunteered several days each week for over 25 years at St. Elizabeth Hospital delivering mail, warm wishes and cheer to the patients as well as often working in the gift shop.   Mongie also often volunteered for many years preparing and serving food for the needy in various locations in Beaumont.     

Mongie was happiest when she was with her family.   She would beam with pride while around her treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren.    

Mongie is survived by her husband of seventy-four years, Leonard Swartz of Beaumont; sons, Gary Swartz and his wife Gail, of Bellaire; and Bruce Swartz of Beaumont; grandchildren, Hershel Swartz and his wife, Dr. Sarah, of Bellaire; and Rachel Toubin and her husband, Andrew, of Bellaire; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Swartz, Byer Swartz, Sydney Dylan Swartz, Sam Toubin, and Peri Lynn Toubin, all of Bellaire.  She is also survived by many beloved nephews and their spouses, a beloved niece and her husband.

Mongie’s funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Temple Emanuel, 1120 Broadway Street, Beaumont, Texas with her interment to follow at Kol Israel Cemetery, Beaumont.
