Ramona Kelley

Ramona Clarice Kelley, 90, of Kountze, died Friday, October 4, 2019. She was born on December 1, 1928, in the Pert community in Anderson County, Texas in 1928, to Dave and Clarice Rogers.

They lived and worked in that community until they moved to Baytown, Texas where Dave Rogers took a job at the Humble Baytown Refinery during WWII and they moved to Baytown prior to her senior year in high school. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown and started to Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. While attending Sam Houston she met and married her husband and returned WWII Veteran, James G Kelley in 1948. They finished college at Sam Houston and moved to Crockett, Texas where Jim began teaching vocational agriculture. Jim took a job teaching in Kountze in 1956 and he and Ramona moved there with their family. Shortly after the move she began working as secretary at the Methodist church. After about a year she began work at Kountze Public Schools as secretary to the Superintendent where she worked until her retirement in 1984. She and Jim enjoyed working together in the community and taking yearly camping vacations with their family to the Rockies and to her favorite, the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Survivors include her son, Roger Kelley and his wife, Hinda; seven grandsons, Jared Kelley and his wife, Sarah; Matthew Kelley and his wife, Elizabeth; Michael Kelley; Nicholas Kelley and his wife, Stacy; Travis Kelley and his wife, Ashley; Nathanael Kelley; and James Haberman and his wife, Christina; and nineteen great-grandchildren, George, Katie, Calvin, Reuben, Samuel, Emmett, Gehrig, Kairi, Penelope, Elena, Beckham, Wyatt, Kailyn, Augustus, Henry, Roxanne, Chance, Hunter, and Harper.

Ramona is preceded in death by her husband, James Kelley; parents; and her daughter, Kay Haberman.

A gathering of Mrs. Kelley’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m. with her funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2019, at First United Methodist Church, 1015 South Pine, Kountze, under the direction of Broussard’s, 490 Cemetery Road, Silsbee. Her interment will follow at 4:00 p.m., at Olive Branch Cemetery, Anderson County.
